Business in the front, party in the back
Oops, I accidentally bought an El Camino...
Put in what I thought was a low bid on this car at a heavy equipment auction in Denver. Figured I'd get out-bid, but nope! So here it is...
The cowl tag (aka trim, body or Fisher tag) shows this car's originally build options.
"07B" in the top left (hard to see) is the production date. In this case, the second week of July.
"ST65-13680" Tells us that it's a '65 model year and 13680 is the model number. 13680 is an El Camino "Custom" V8 meaning it gets cool upgrades such as extra chrome trim, cloth seating surfaces, and more.
"TR 750 A" is for an Aqua interior.
"Paint CC" is for Ermine white exterior.
"ACC" being empty says that it didn't really get any options. But it is a factory A/C car.
You'll see the "327" badge on the fender above the flag emblem.
Slooooooot maaaaaags...! But they're coming off. They're factory 14" size, and when I switch out to 4 wheel disc brakes, we've got to go with 15"s. So I'm going to put on black factory style rallyes.
That trailer hitch is definitely coming off.
Going to do 2" drop spindles in the front and adjust the rear coil-overs that are on it down 2" to give it a better stance. Also going to get rid of those long exhaust tubes and end them under the body by the rear axle to help accentuate those beautiful, long body lines.
That tool box and Kargo King bed mat have to go!
Here, the bad paint is obvious. It's also messed up on the hood and roof. Once the 5-6 surface rust spots are taken care of, it's going back white, but a really cool metallic.
Ahhhh! The L74 300hp 327ci V8! While this is not the original engine, it is a remanufactured, year correct engine. The PowerGlide 2 speed auto was swapped out for a TH350 3 speed. While it would have been nice to have it original, that TH does make highway cruising better!
This is obviously an older restoration. Black is the easiest thing to put in because it's readily available.
Going back to aqua on the inside. But deviating a little bit... instead of solid (which is a lot as far as color is concerned) I'm going to go two-tone. Dash pad, tops of doors, lower door panel, seat trim, and carpet will all be dark aqua.
Pulled out a subwoofer with built-in amplifier from behind the driver's seat
Those door speakers just irritate me...
I pulled the carpet out the day after it arrived. We had a rainstorm and it was soaked. The floorboards only have surface rust, so that's a big win! We'll get the back glass out and resealed as well as fill in the holes in the body from the radio antennas.
Seriously considering going with Classic Instruments gauges so I can get rid of the ones installed under the dash. And you can bet your last dollar that Grant GT wheel is coming out soon! And yes, this is a factory A/C car... but you'll notice there's no vent above the radio. Apparently the system wasn't working, so they gutted it. Vintage Air is going in it, using the factory controls and vents.
